NEW DELHI — Indian auto magnate Ratan Tata, whose Tata Group stable includes the luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover, said he plans to bring the no-frills Tata Nano to the U.S. market, but probably not before 2013.

According to India's Business Standard newspaper, Ratan Tata said demand for the Nano, which is priced from around $2,500 in the home market, continues to outstrip supply in India.

"We are recognizing the demand for Nano not only in the regional developing market, but also in the developed market," Tata told the paper. "Therefore, we may launch Nano for the U.S. market."

Tata said a U.S.-spec Nano would require a larger engine, as well as additional modifications and safety equipment. He said a U.S. launch is still at least three years away.
